Grassroots - Grade 8
Grassroots Grade 8 referees will be eligible to referee primarily youth matches.

Minimum age:

  • Must be at least 14 Years old to referee.

Maximum age:

  • 17 Years old.

Minimum age to enroll in a referee course:

  • 3 months before the 14th birthday.

Background Check:

  • Only 18 yrs old and older registering individuals must complete and pass a criminal background check to referee in North Carolina.

Registration Fee:

New Referees

  • Total of $80.00 for persons 17 and under.   

Recertifying Referees

  • Total of $80.00 for persons 17 and under. (Late recertifying fees of $20.00)

 

New Grassroots Grade 8 Referee Course Requirements:

  • Registration and payment through Arbitersports.com
  • Registration with the new US Soccer Learning Center.
  • Completion of the Grassroots Online Course in the Learning Center.
  • Attendance to an In-Person Practical Field Training Session.

Testing:

  • No online exam
  • No Physical Fitness Test.

Recertifying Grass Grade 8 Referee course requirements:

  • Registration and payment through Arbitersports.com
  • Registration with the new US Soccer Learning Center.
  • Completion of the Grassroots Online Course.

 


Grassroots - Grade 7
Grassroots Grade 7 referees will be eligible to referee youth matches and adult amateur matches.

Minimum age:

  • Must be at least 18 Years old.

Experience level:

  • None, all persons 18 and older will automatcally be considered Grassroots Grade 7

Background Check:

  • Registering individuals 18 and older must complete and pass a criminal background check to referee in North Carolina.

Registration Fee:

  • Total of $100.00 (Late registration fees of $20.00)

Note: This registration fee amount is subject to change.

Testing:

  • Currently no exam
  • No Formal Assessment is needed
  • No Physical Fitness Test is needed

New Grassroots Grade 7 Referee Course Requirements:

  • Registration and payment through Arbitersports.com
  • Registration with the new US Soccer Learning Center.
  • Completion of the Grassroots Online Course in the Learning Center.
  • Attendance to an In-Person Practical Field Training Session.
  • Completion of SafeSport Training

Recertifying Grass Grade 7 Referee course requirements:

  • Registration and payment through Arbitersports.com
  • Registration with the new US Soccer Learning Center.
  • Completion of the Grassroots Online Course.

Grassroots - Grade 7A
Grade 7 referees will be eligible to referee youth matches and adult amateur matches.

Referees in this grade will be eligible for consideration in:

  • Assignment to State, Regional, and National Tournaments
  • Advanced level training including professional level clinics
  • Priority of assignments and ranking within the NCSRA assignment system

Minimum age:

  • Must be at least 18 Years old to referee.

Experience level:

  • 3 years registration as a Grade 8/Grade 7 referee.

Declaration:

  • It must be declared by the referee to NCSRA that he/she wishes to attain Grade 7A, OR remain at a Grade 7A.

Match log:

  • Must have a total of 75 games as a Referee on a match using the Diagonal System of Control involving 1 Referee and 2 Assistant Referees.
  • 15 of the 75 games must be on U-15 matches or above.

Background Check:

  • Registering individuals 18 and older must complete and pass a criminal background check to referee in North Carolina.

Registration Fee:

  • Total of $100.00 (Late registration fees of $20.00)

Requirements for Grade 7A Referees:

  • Must complete the Grade 7A Online Course
  • Must attend 2 State Run Events
  • Must attend the State Referee Clinic
  • Completion of SafeSport Training

Testing:

  • Pass the State Referee Examination with 80% or above.
  • Pass the Grade 7A Sprint and Interval Physical Fitness Test.
  • If you are upgrading to 7A you must pass 1 Formal Assessment as a Referee by an Assessor on a competitive 70 minute match or above.

Note: NCSRA may, in its discretion for good cause shown, waive the time in registration requirements in exceptional cases

 


Grade 6 State Referee
Grade 6 state Referees will be eligible to referee youth matches and adult amateur matches and professional games.

Referees in this grade will be eligible for consideration in:

  • Assignment to State, Regional, and National Tournaments
  • Advanced level training including professional level clinics
  • Priority of assignments and ranking within the NCSRA assignment system

Minimum age:

  • Must be at least 18 Years old to referee.

Experience level:

  • 1 year or more registration as a Grade 7A referee.

Note: Referees qualified as Grade 7 under the old requirements before July 1st, 2014 will be considered as the equivalent of the new 7A referees for 2014.

Declaration:

  • It must be declared by the referee to NCSRA that he/she wishes to attain Grade 6 OR remain at a Grade 6.

Match log:

  • Must have a total of 100 games U-15 or above as a Referee on a match using the Diagonal System of Control involving one Referee and two Assistant Referees.
  • 15 of the 100 games must be on adult amateur matches.
  • must have at least 25 games as an Assistant Referee

Background Check:

  • Registering individuals must complete and pass a criminal background check to referee in North Carolina.

Registration Fee:

  • Total of $100.00 (Late registration fees of $20.00)

Requirements for Grade 6 State Referees:

  • Must complete the Grade 6 Online course
  • Must attend 2 State Run Events
  • Must attend the State Referee Clinic

Testing:

  • Pass the State Referee Examination with 80% or above.
  • Pass the Sprint and Interval Physical Fitness Test.
  • Pass 2 Formal Assessments as a Referee by 2 different State Assessors, or National Referee Coach on a competitive 80 minute match or above.
  • One of the Formal Assessments must be on at least a 90 minute U17 or above match. Each Assessment MUST be paid for by the Referee pior to receiving an assessment.

(80 minute matches must consist of two 40 minute halves)

Note: NCSRA may, in its discretion for good cause shown, waive the time in registration requirements in exceptional cases

 


Grade 5 State Referee
Grade 5 state Referees will be eligible to referee youth matches and adult amateur matches and professional games.

Referees in this grade will be eligible for consideration in:

  • Assignment to State, Regional, and National Tournaments
  • Advanced level training including professional level clinics
  • Priority of assignments and ranking within the NCSRA assignment system

Minimum age:

  • Must be at least 18 Years old to referee.

Experience level:

  • 1 year or more registration as a Grade 6 referee.

Declaration:

  • It must be declared by the referee to NCSRA that he/she wishes to attain Grade 5 OR remain at a Grade 5.

Match log:

  • Must have a total of 100 games U-15 or above as a Referee on a match using the Diagonal System of Control involving one Referee and two Assistant Referees.
  • 15 of the 100 games must be on adult amateur matches.

Background Check:

  • Registering individuals must complete and pass a criminal background check to referee in North Carolina.

Registration Fee:

  • Total of $100.00 (Late registration fees of $20.00)

  • Must complete the Grade 5 Online course
  • Must attend 2 State Run Events
  • Must attend the State Referee Clinic

Testing:

  • Pass the National Laws Exam.
  • Pass the Grade 5 Sprint and Interval Physical Fitness Test.
  • Pass 3 Formal Assessments as a Referee by 3 different National Referee coaches on a Adult matches. Each Assessment MUST be paid for by the Referee pior to receiving an assessment.
